Rediscovering music and theatre – the Klang!Festival Bielefeld offers art and culture far from the mainstream. Founded in 2015, the objective of the association is to promote cultural education and cultural participation for children, adolescents and adults, especially in Bielefeld and the surrounding region. Regardless of school performance and offers, social and cultural background, the aim is to introduce everybody to art and culture through music and all forms of musical theatre.

Music for your own personality

Nike Schmitka, singer and music teacher from Bielefeld, is the driving force and motivating soul of the diverse projects of the association. She finds: “Music shapes the character. While singing, sound, text and performance have to be coordinated mentally and physically. Singing also trains our concentration and fitness. The voice is our first instrument, which we always have with us. Many projects of the Klang!Festival therefore start with the voice.”

The association initiated, organised and promoted the first major Klang!Festival in 2016 and has continued it every two years since then. A precursor to the association is the Bielefeld Musical Advent Calendar and the Sing!Fest 2015 in the Bielefeld Rudolf Oetker Hall.

Overview of sponsored projects

After Work Singing

The Klang!Festival e.V. association, the StadtKirchenArbeit (CityChurchWork) and the Bielefeld Bürgerstiftung (Citizens’ Foundation) invite everybody to meet up and sing together every Friday in the Altstädter Nicolaikirche (Old Town Nicolai Church) in Bielefeld. After a two-year break and distancing due to the pandemic, the tradition restarted in 2022. Together they sing and try things out – professionally accompanied by choir director Kamilla Matuschewska. You can find out how to participate here.

Zoo-Hause ist es am schönsten (There's no place like home [the zoo])

This play takes children on a musical journey with animals. Together they will explore what home actually means. There are workshops for kindergartens and school classes that prepare them for a visit to the theatre. The times and tickets can be found here.

Sing!Fest

A whole day dedicated to song: The Sing!Fest is an immersive sound event for any age. The walk-through “Singparcours” in the Rudolf Oetker Hall is designed to suit the different age groups, with quieter and louder sections, as well as lots of movement and action at the individual stations. The diverse ways of expressing your voice, songs, rhythm and movement are all on the agenda here.

Fairytale concert

Leave everyday life behind and enter the fantastic world of music and stories: The fairytale concert takes young and old away and encourages them to join in. The words of the fairy tale are interwoven with music and song, and the children can actively shape the fairy tale themselves through dance, movement and action.

Tulatwah concert

With their band Tulatwah, Nike Schmitka, Kamilla Matuszewska, Bernd Heitzler and Morten Wienold are seasoned performers at the Klang!Festival. They cover a wide variety of music, including classics and jazz, mixed with elements from reggae and pop.
